The Dolomites – also called the “Pale Mountains” – are a southern mountain range of the Alps that spreads out across the province of Bozen and tapers off in the province of Trient and Belluno.
The Dolomites owe their name to the geologist Déodat Dolomieu who studied their structure and the chemical compounds of calcium carbonate and magnesium.
The rock is grey or yellow in colour, running into red. This is why the Dolomites appear white during sunrise and red during sunset, which in Ladin is called “enrosadüra”.
