90% of the population in the entire Dolomite region, and therefore also in Alta Badia, are speaking Ladin, an archaic language that is a reflection of the Latin spoken in the times of Emperor Diocletian, as are the Friulian and Sardinian languages.
The Ladinians are marked by the remoteness of their natural surroundings and the fact that they were cut off from the history of the rest of Italy for centuries.
This is why the Ladinians developed a culture of their own, which is based on agriculture and livestock breeding, supplemented by the history of craftsmen in the processing of fabrics, iron and wood.
The sculptures from Gröden are not only well-known in Italy, but throughout the world. Despite a growing influx of summer and winter tourists, this lifestyle allowed the Ladinians to preserve their traditions such as their eating habits and traditional dress, their songs and music, their religious rituals, but also their mythology, stories and legends.
